Master of Arts in Physics Education

The Master of Arts in Physics Education is offered through the Department of Physics and the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Through distance learning and summer study in Charlottesville, the program provides middle school physical science and high school physics teachers with a stronger background in physics.
Each year, students take two summer courses in residence at U.Va. and usually two distance-learning courses during the academic year. Students can complete their requirements of 30 hours for the degree in two and a half years. Advising is available through the Department of Physics. Teachers can start at any time during the sequence of courses. The degree program is not designed to prepare individuals to teach physics at the community college or college-level.
